West Brom midfielder James Morrison has admitted that he cannot begrudge Saido Berahino's desire to move to Tottenham.

The 22-year-old striker was the subject of several failed bids from Spurs throughout the summer but the Baggies repeatedly blocked his move to north London.

The England Under-21 striker handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force his transfer over the line but it was rejected by West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace.

Berahino sent a controversial Tweet on deadline day that suggested he was prepared to strike and his future at the Hawthorns remains unclear.

However, he he has since returned to first-team training ahead of Saturday's game against Southampton.

Morrison believes that he and his teammates understand why the forward was keen to join Mauricio Pochettino's side but warned the youngster that West Brom deserve to be respected for the role they have played in his development.

“I think we do [understand]," said the 29-year-old. "You can’t knock him for wanting to go to Tottenham, but he should respect the club as they’ve been with him since a young age.

“He’s (Berahino) done it before, so I look forward to having a chat with him and help guide him to get back on track and do what he does best, which is score goals and perform.”

Morrison also believes that the presence of manager Tony Pulis will help to sooth Berahino's rift with the club as he comes to terms with staying in the West Midlands.

“I am sure Tony will have a chat with him. Tony is a good man and he’s a wise man as well, he’ll guide him through it and I am sure he’ll come out the other side."

Berahino was Albion's top scorer in the Premier League last season with 14 goals but has failed to find the net in two appearances during the current campaign.
