Tottenham's Kyle Walker: Era of Arsenal and Chelsea dominance is over after London power shift

Kyle Walker believes the landscape of London football has changed as Tottenham prepare to take on West Ham tomorrow.

When Walker moved to Spurs in 2009, Chelsea had won two League titles — and were on their way to a third — and five domestic cups in nine years, with Arsenal taking two titles and three cups.

Chelsea won the title last term and Arsenal finished third, 11 points ahead of Spurs, but this term Tottenham are second, three points ahead of the Gunners and 18 above Chelsea, who in turn trail West Ham by seven points.

Walker said: “It’s good for the League that everyone is on a level playing field now, and everyone can beat everyone else. You know you’ll be in for a tough game in every London derby.

“We’ve done well this season and deserve credit for where we are, but the League is up and down.

“Who would have thought Leicester would have been top at this stage of the season? We need to keep snapping at their ankles and hope they mess up once.”

Tottenham have taken only one point from Leicester this season, from a draw at the King Power Stadium in August.

Walker said: “I kept thinking, ‘They’ve got to hit a brick wall’. I thought that it might have happened at Christmas but they’ve just kept going and they fully deserve to be where they are.

“You think, ‘For goodness sake, when are those two (Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez) going to quit playing around?’ But Jamie is from Sheffield, like me, so I was really happy when he broke the league goalscoring record, scoring in 11 straight games.

“Mahrez is fantastic and they have one or two others who aren’t getting the credit they deserve.”
