Harry Kane gives Tottenham team-mate Heung-min Son a hug and a pep talk after horror Andre Gomes injury

Harry Kane has urged Heung-min Son to put the trauma of Andre Gomes’s injury behind him and help Tottenham to victory at Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday night.

Son was inconsolable after his tackle led to the Everton midfielder suffering a fracture-dislocation to his right ankle, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

The South Korean, who was sent off for the challenge but later had his red card rescinded on appeal, has been offered counselling by Spurs but has travelled to Serbia for Wednesday's crucial Champions League group-stage clash.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino described Son as “devastated” but said he is ready to play at the formidable Rajko Mitic Stadium — and Kane says his strike partner must put Sunday out of his mind.

“I gave him a little hug and told him it wasn’t his fault when I went into training on Monday,” said Kane, who has recovered from the virus which ruled him out of the 1-1 draw at Everton.

“I know what type of guy he is and I know that it would have hurt him a lot. With the players, the manager and everyone consoling him, he’s started to feel a bit better. Of course, it’s a very unfortunate situation but he knows that he has to put it to the back of his mind and try and concentrate on the game. No one likes to see a big injury like that happen. It’s now about putting it to the back of our minds, sending our thoughts and prayers to Andre and getting on with our job, which is a big game.”

An independent panel upheld Spurs’s claim of wrongful dismissal and overturned Son’s automatic three-match ban. Pochettino described the ruling as “completely fair” but lamented that the red card was the key factor in Everton’s late equaliser and another two points dropped.

Like last season, Europe could offer some welcome respite for Spurs, who have taken 24 points from 23 League matches since mid-February but reached a Champions League Final in the same period.

Another win over the Serbians on Wednesday would be a significant step towards the last-16 and Kane knows full well that the knockouts can prove unpredictable.

“We’re in a better position than we were after a few [Champions League] games last season,” added the England captain, who said the players would follow Uefa’s racism protocol in the event of any abuse tonight.

“If we win, we’d be in a great spot to qualify and then in the knockout stages, as you saw last year, it can go anyone’s way. That’s the thing we’ve got to take.”
