Heung-min Son red card overturned: FA upholds Tottenham's wrongful dismissal claim after Andre Gomes injury

Heung-min Son's red card against Everton on Sunday has been overturned after Tottenham appealed against the decision.

The forward will now be available for Tottenham's next three domestic matches – the League games against Sheffield United, West Ham and Bournemouth – after an independent panel upheld Spurs' claim of wrongful dismissal and overturned Son's three-match ban.

"It was good for everyone, fair," manager Mauricio Pochettino said when addressing the media shortly afterwards. "What we cannot change now is the result. To play with 10 men for 15 or 20 minutes was the key to drawing the game.

"I was confident [it would be overturned]. We were all confused after the game. I was talking with certain people and the referee. Now I think it's completely fair that he's not going to be suspended.

"The only problem is that they didn't check [the referee's decision]. VAR is there to check. It was so clear and obvious that it wasn't a red card.

"We cannot change the result. It was 1-0 for us, and very comfortable, to play with 10 opened the game for them and we missed two points in the table."

With Spurs' leading 1-0, Son was sent off for a trip on Andre Gomes in the 79th minute. The Everton midfielder suffered a season-ending ankle injury and referee Martin Atkinson initially reached for his yellow card before appearing to change to a red after realising the severity of Gomes' injury.

Everton equalised in the seventh minute of stoppage-time through substitute Cenk Tosun.

Gomes underwent surgery on Monday for a fracture-dislocation on his right ankle and is expected to make a full recovery.

The VAR did not overrule Atkinson and, in a statement, the Premier League explained the change afterwards, saying: "The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge."

Son was left inconsolable by Gomes' injury and he has been offered counselling. The forward has travelled to Serbia for Spurs' Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday.
