John Boyega has finally revealed the real reason his Star Wars character quit his career as a Stormtrooper.

Boyega, 24, celebrated Star Wars day by joking that his on screen alter-ego, Finn, had quit the job because of the soldiers’ twerking.

The actor posted a video of a group of Stormtroopers dancing and recreating the move made famous by Miley Cyrus.

He captioned the clip: “There is a reason I left these guys #starwarsday.”

Boyega - who today announced his return to the stage as Woyzeck in a new adaption at the Old Vic - celebrated 'May the Fourth' on the set of Episode 8 with his family and co-stars.

He tweeted: “Currently on set surrounded by my family celebrating Star Wars day while filming Star Wars in Star Wars gear and ye.....happy Star Wars day.”

His co-star Daisy Ridley also got into the celebratory spirit by posting a video message to fans to honour the special day.

The London-born actress was joined by BB-8 and a handful of familiar faces as she took the opportunity to thank fans for supporting the Star Wars: Force For Change campaign.

Boyega and Ridley are currently filming Episode 8 at Pinewood Studios.

Last week they had a royal visit from Princes William and Harry who took a tour of the set and fought each other in a mock lightsaber battle.

Episode 8 is set for release in December 2017.
