Olivia Colman has sparked speculation she could succeed Daniel Craig in the iconic role of James Bond.

The Oscar-winning actress, who took home the Best Actress gong at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday night, could be a strong choice to play the next 007 agent.

Following her success at the prestigious award show, Betfair said her name could be thrown into the ring in the wake of a “growing precedent of women taking over huge roles traditionally reserved for men.”

However, bookmakers still put Colman as a “long shot” for the iconic role. Tom Hiddleston is still the favourite with odds of 5/4 and Cillian Murphy shortly behind with 6/4.

Betfair spokesperson Katie Baylis said: “Olivia Colman’s shock Oscar win yesterday has catapulted to her into one of the biggest stars in the world and now there’s even talk she could be a shock choice for the next James Bond.

“There is certainly a precedent recently of women taking over huge roles traditionally reserved for men such as Jodie Whittaker in her role as Doctor Who. However, we still make it a long shot that she would get the Bond gig and make it 100/1 that she will take over from Daniel Craig as 007.”

The emotional speech saw a teary-eyed Colman struggling to keep it together as she poured through a slew of thank you messages.

The actress became everyone’s favourite after she blew a raspberry as she was told to wrap up her heartfelt speech before giving one last shout out to her “best friend” and partner of 25 years, Ed Sinclair.
