Guy Ritchie has defended David Beckham’s performance in his latest film, calling him a “fabulous actor”.

Beckham, who plays Trigger in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, was described as “cringeworthy” by fans when a clip of his character was released earlier this week.

But Ritchie dismissed the critics and heaped praise on his “fantastic” friend.

Speaking at the premiere, he told Sky News: “He was fantastic, I love old Becksy.

“He is a fabulous actor and a real pleasure to be with.”

He was less forthcoming when asked if he thought Beckham could enjoy a successful career on the silver screen, saying: “I don't know yet, one step at a time.”

Beckham received less than complimentary feedback on his acting abilities with many deeming his performance “the worst acting I've ever seen”, while others joked that the “stone” acted better.

Piers Morgan also mocked his “Oscar-worthy” role and likened him to one of the Mitchell brothers from EastEnders.

Others defended the sportsman with one tweeting: “I'm not a huge David Beckham fan but #ffs give him a break. I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the whole film...”

“I haven’t taken a step into acting,” he told Edith Bowman at the London premiere. “It’s me doing something I love with a friend. It’s not a new career or something I want to go into.

“I’ve always liked a challenge, and usually it’s to do with sport, but with this I didn’t know if I was going to be OK.”

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is slated for UK cinema release on May 19.
