Adam Sandler has paid a heartbreaking tribute to Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce amid an outpouring of grief after the actor's death aged 20.

Boyce died due to "an ongoing medical condition", his family said in a statement on Saturday night.

Sandler, who played his on-screen dad in comedy films Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2, posted a tribute on social media alongside a black and white photo of the actor.

He said: “Too Young. Too sweet. Too funny. Just the nicest, most talented, and most decent kid around.

“Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world.

“Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave us. So much more was on the way. Our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.”

Boyce was also known for playing Luke Ross in TV show Jessie and Carlos in TV movie series Descendants.

His Jesse co-star Skai Jackson wrote on Instagram: “Cam, you were one of a kind. My heart will be forever broken.

"I am so happy that I got to spend almost everyday with you on set, you gave the best hugs. I wish I would have hugged you tighter when I saw you a couple of months ago.

"Thank you so much for being the big brother I never had.”

Both Descendents films were helmed by High School Musical director Kenny Ortega, who paid tribute on Instagram.

He said: "Cameron, you left a big piece of your heart for those of us who knew and loved you in this life and you left with a big piece of our hearts today. We will continue to carry your loving spirit forward. You are our forever boy."

Glee star Kevin McHale wrote on Twitter: “This is awful. I'm heartbroken for his family, friends, and everyone who was impacted by him. He was so young.”

YouTuber James Charles said: “Rest in peace to cameron boyce he was so young, incredibly talented, but also one of the kindest ppl I’ve ever met. sending love to his friends & family.”

A Disney Channel spokesperson said: “From a young age, Cameron Boyce dreamed of sharing his extraordinary artistic talents with the world. As a young man, he was fuelled by a strong desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives through his humanitarian work.

“He was an incredibly talented performer, a remarkably caring and thoughtful person and, above all else, he was a loving and dedicated son, brother, grandson and friend. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, cast mates and colleagues and join his many millions of fans in grieving his untimely passing. He will be dearly missed.”

Boyce was born in California and was also known for his humanitarian work. Appearing on screen from a young age, his other credits included Mirrors and Eagle Eye.

"It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron," a family statement issued on Saturday night said.

"He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated.

"The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him.

"We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother."
