This is the terrifying moment a violent robber battered a Post Office worker with a claw hammer in a “frenzied” attack during a gang raid.

Daryl McNamee, 28, bludgeoned a shop worker in her 60s twice over the head with the hammer as she stacked shelves during a raid on the store he carried out with two accomplices.

Shocking footage shows the victim being shoved to the ground as the masked gang use a sledgehammer to try to smash their way through a protective screen around the counter.

One of the raiders is seen pulling the till from the counter onto the victim as she lay helpless and partially unconscious on the floor during the terrifying ordeal.

The three men eventually left the shop, in Gravesend, empty-handed after the botched raid. They fled the scene in a stolen Audi A3, police said.

Daryl McNamee, 28, of Jenningtree Road, Erith, was today sentenced at Inner London Crown Court to almost seven years in jail after admitting attempted robbery and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Detective Constable Paul Walker of the Kent and Essex Serious crime directorate, said: "This was a sickeningly violent and gratuitous attack on a woman in her 60s who was just trying to do her job.

"McNamee showed no mercy towards her, even attempting to drop the heavy till on her head as she lay semi-conscious at his feet.

"The victim of this frenzied assault has been left picking up the pieces and is still unable to return to work."

McNamee's accomplices remain at large.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 01474 330519, quoting XY/20245/13. Alternatively, to remain anonymous, call Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
