Knife-wielding thieves threatened a teenage girl and her manager when they raided the till at a south London fish and chip shop.

Two hooded men armed with a knife and a hammer stole hundreds of pounds from Mr Chips in Hook Road, Chessington on Friday when they entered the takeaway at 10pm on Friday.

A 16-year-old girl and a manager, believed to be in 50s, were closing the shop when the men ordered them to lie down on the floor before emptying the till.

No-one was injured in the raid but owner Simon Scroggs said both victims were left traumatised as a result.

Mr Scroggs said: "When I heard what had happened I was shocked. We have never had an incident like this in the 40 years we have been open.

"We are a family friendly business and we have young girls who work for us so we try to make it as safe as as possible.

"The manager that was on duty has taken some time off but will be back at work soon. What happened was a pretty traumatic experience for anyone so it has been difficult to cope with."

Mr Scroggs said the thieves entered the store through a back door in an area uncovered by CCTV.

Detectives from Kingston are investigating the armed robbery and have today launched an appeal to help identify the suspects.

One man is described as white, 6ft tall, thin build and in his early 20s. He spoke with an English accent and wore a black and white hooded top while holding a knife and hammer.

The other man is described as white, 5ft 8in, stocky build in his late teens. He also spoke with an English accent and was wearing a red hooded top.
