Strictly Come Dancing fans are fearing for Kate Silverton after a rib injury blighted her performance on Saturday night.

The BBC newsreader took to the floor with partner Aljaž Skorjanec for the first Argentine Tango of the series.

Silverton was forced to perform through pain after injuring a rib during the week, dosing up on medication.

The couple scored 23 for their dance, leaving fans worried for her place in the competition while slamming the judges for "undermarking" the pair.

One wrote: "Why are the judges so harsh on Kate? They didn’t take into account her injury either! #strictly."

While another said: "Oh dear - I agree with Craig - hope Kate manages to get through to next week #strictly #scd."

"#Strictly I love Craig, but a 4 for Kate? Seriously?" raged somebody else.

Craig Revel Horwood, who gave the performance a four, called it "stuck in the mud", saying "for me it was too heavy, it needs to be a lot lighter.... I felt I could feel each moment coming."

Head judge Shirley Ballas called the performance "laboured" as she hit out at the couple's missing "chemistry".

Silverton explained to Claudia Winkleman after the dance that she had "stripped a muscle on her rib" late on Friday so wasn't given much time to recover.

On Friday, Silverton shared a video of herself guzzling pain relief after her injury on her Twitter page.

As she inhaled Entonox, Silverton said: “The last time I did this was in childbirth which was really good, actually I've forgotten how good it was.

“I've somehow stripped the muscle in my rib on my best dance, on my best dance.”

She then pointed the camera at the medic treating her injury, who joked she was "sucking the life out of" the pain relief.

He added: "It's Nitrogen and Oxygen which is used to relax the muscles, which is why Kate is on the floor at the moment and she's constantly sucking on it like it's a cigar."

Strictly Come Dancing continues Sunday at 7.50pm on BBC One.
