Peter Kay has announced his television comeback with two unseen Car Share episodes set to air on BBC this May.

The comedian, who recently cancelled his entire live tour, broke hearts when he revealed the end of hit BBC comedy Peter Kay’s Car Share after the second series ended.

Writing on his website on Thursday, Kay revealed that a brand new Car Share: Unscripted Special will be aired on BBC One on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7.

The Bolton-born comedian revealed that the entire special episode will be “completely improvised”.

The next Monday and the following few will see the second series of the hit comedy aired in full, with a new series finale broadcast on May 28, the second Bank Holiday Monday of the month.

Fans are already excited for the return of the programme, hoping for a different outcome in Kayleigh and John’s relationship.

Played by Sian Gibson, Kayleigh struck up a friendship with Kay’s John when they began sharing a ride to work.

Their budding friendship soon seemed to suggest there could be more to their relationship but hopes of a romance were dashed in the last episode of series two.

Earlier this month, Kay held a charity screening of Car Share at the Blackpool Opera House to raise money for The Lily Foundation.

In a statement posted to his social media accounts, he wrote: “My sincerest apologies. This decision has not been taken lightly and I'm sure you'll understand my family must always come first.

“I've always endeavoured to protect my family's privacy from the media. I hope that the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again I'm very sorry.”
