Wah Do Dem is a happy holiday in Jamaica

10 April 2012

It’s impossible not to like this small-budget road movie, written and directed by Ben Chance and Sam Fleischer — even if it sometimes trips over itself in its anxiety to be original.

It has Sean Bones as a young would-be musician from Brooklyn who wins tickets for a Caribbean cruise with his girl only to find she dumps him before they can travel. Alone, he finds the ship’s jollity strange — but his arrival in Jamaica is even more of a surprise.

Robbed of his possessions and stranded without a shirt, he misses the boat and sets out for the US embassy in Kingston on foot. An atmospheric indie and reggae soundtrack combines with the characters he meets to provide a lyrical summation of a culture totally alien to the West.

Carl Bradshaw of The Harder They Come adorns a great cast as a Rasta prophet.
