Netflix is increasing the price of some of its subscription packages “to reflect the significant investments” it has made in new shows and films such as After Life, The Crown and The Highwaymen.

From today the standard plan, allowing users to watch on two screens at the same time, goes up by £1 to £8.99 a month to new customers while the premium package, which enables viewing on up to four screens, rises by £2 to £11.99. The basic package, which is limited to one screen at a time and does not include HD, stays at £5.99.

The new prices come into effect for existing customers when they make their next monthly payment.

The fast-growing streaming service, which has about 10 million subscribers in the UK, said it was the first price rise since October 2017.

A Netflix spokesman said: “We change our prices from time to time to reflect the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films, as well as improvements to our product. We have more than 50 productions planned in the UK this year, including new seasons of Black Mirror, Sex Education and After Life.

“Our basic membership will remain at the same price, ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy our content.”

Last year more than 25,000 cast, crew and extras worked on 40 Netflix productions in the UK.
