Murdoch Mysteries interview: Thomas Craig on his return in the Canadian series

London Live’s Toby Earle speaks to actor Thomas Craig about his character's return in the ninth series of Murdoch Mysteries.

Craig plays Inspector Brackenreid in the Canadian television drama Murdoch Mysteries, based on the novel series by Maureen Jennings.

Sheffield-born Craig said he is not “tough and hard” like his character Inspector Brackenreid, a blunt and sceptical Yorkshireman with a fondness for whisky.

Craig said: “I developed a backstory where he had been in the British army and he had been all around the world – he had fought in Afghanistan and then he ends up in Canada.

“He comes out of the army and meets a Canadian lady, marries her, and joins the police force.

“At the beginning of season eight, you did not know if I was dead or alive. The show usually ends with a cliff-hanger.”

A fan of Sheffield Wednesday, Craig persuaded producers to include the team’s first ever league in the script for the episode set in 1903.
