Spotify playlist of the week

There’s a new entry in the top five with Jason Derulo’s peppy Want to Want Me, which has a hint of early (Dirty Mind) Prince about it. Omi’s reggae-infused Cheerleader remains unwaveringly in top spot on Spotify’s UK top 100, with Galantis’s infectious Runaway (U & I) sitting pretty at number eight.

1. Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) by Omi
2. Lean on Me by Major Lazer and DJ Snake
3. See You Again (featuring Charlie Puth) by Wiz Khalifa
4. Where Are Ü Now by Jack Ü Skrillex and Diplo
5. Want to Want Me by Jason Derulo

Most talked about TV show: No Offence

No Offence: Shameless creator Paul Abbott returns to the small screen

At 9pm on Tuesdays, Joanna Scanlan continues to scene-steal as DI Vivienne Deering in Paul Abbott’s searing, chilling and darkly comical cop drama set in Manchester. In the latest episode, the police readied a trap for the prime suspect in a serial killer case, but their best-laid plans soon came unstuck. The long-suffering law enforcers risked their operation being derailed entirely when a notorious child murderer’s new identity was leaked online, so the team came up with a new approach. Elaine Cassidy and Saira Choudhry also star in this raucous show from the creator of Shameless.

Film of the moment: Wild

Cheryl, a heroin user and serial adulterer who is mourning the death of her mother (Laura Dern) from cancer, reasons that by walking the 1,000 mile Pacific Crest Trail she might flush out some demons. It sounds hokey but Wild is anything but. Reese Witherspoon, who has appeared a lost soul herself since her barnstorming turn in 1999’s Election, is outstanding as reckless Cheryl. This beautifully handled adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir is further enhanced by Vallee’s hypnotic direction and Nick Hornby’s adroit script. Available to rent on Virgin Media.

Best on Netflix: Sense8

Murray Close

“You’re no longer just you... you have seven other selves now,” explains mysterious Sensate Jonas (Naveen Andrews) to baffled Chicago cop (Brian J Smith) at the start of this high concept sci-fi from the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix). Eight strangers around the globe suddenly become mentally and emotionally connected due to an evolutionary leap of technological origin. They’re also being being hunted by a shadowy organisation out to capture, kill or vivisect them. Of course they are. If you have a hokum deficit in your life, tuck into this enjoyable hogwash, which recalls Heroes, is co-directed by Tom Tykwer (Cloud Atlas) and stars Daryl Hannah.

What’s trending

Jamie Foxx demonstrated he was game on the Musical Impressions Generator segment of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He begins with a terrific impression of Mick Jagger doing Hakuna Matata, replete with a flamboyant strut. Fallon hits the high notes for Barry Gibb’s I Love You, You Love Me. Foxx shot back with a droll Toys’R’Us jingle as done by John Legend before Fallon took on the Boss. However, the highlight here is the Django Unchained star’s highly strung impression of Jennifer Hudson for On Top of Spaghetti.

Virgin Media’s best for streaming: Brotherhood

Two 20-something brothers Dan and Toby (played by Ben Ashenden and folk-rock musician Johnny Flynn), become surrogate parents for their brother Jamie, aged 12, when their mother unexpectedly passes away. Polar opposites, Dan is neurotic and uptight and Toby is naive and laid-back. Comedy Central’s new sitcom, which is refreshingly old-fashioned and feels like an English version of Two and a Half Men, centres on the siblings’ vastly differing parenting styles and their tangled love lives. Quite charming. 9.30pm, Tuesdays.
