Zimbabwe collapse at Newlands

14 April 2012

Zimbabwe were humiliated today when they were bowled out for a record low and South Africa took a first innings lead before tea on the first day of the first Test at Newlands.

South Africa were 91 for no wicket at tea in reply to Zimbabwe's 54 all out.
This is Zimbabwe's second series since effectively being suspended from Test cricket following a rebellion by 15 leading players last year.

Zimbabwe lost seven wickets for 37 runs before lunch on the opening day. Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis were the destroyers, claiming three wickets each as Zimbabwe capitulated against the menacing home attack.

Only opener Stuart Matsikenyeri reached double figures but when he was caught by Abraham de Villiers at third slip off Ntini's bowling, the rot well and truly set in.

The morning session also featured three milestones. Wicketkeeper Mark Boucher claimed his 300th Test match dismissal with only Australians Ian Healy (395) and Rodney Marsh (355) ahead of him.

Ntini became only the third South African to reach 200 Test wickets when he bowled Ebrahim in the ninth over with the score on 13.
Zimbabwe skipper Tatenda Taibu, who elected to bat after winning the toss, provided the only moment of pleasure when he edged a boundary to pass the 1,000 Test runs mark.
