Westwood wins his way into world championship

13 April 2012

Lee Westwood headed off to Atlanta today for a tournament which six weeks ago looked way beyond his reach.

After missing the halfway cut at the US PGA Championship, the former European No1 flew to Munich for the BMW International Open and, against all expectation, won for the first time in more than two years.

Yesterday, he won again, claiming the Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews to leap into fourth place on the Order of Merit and into the field for the American Express World Championship starting on Thursday.

Westwood said: "Who would have thought it? It shows how quickly things can turn around. It's hard to separate my wins, but this is right up there and I'm absolutely thrilled.

"I was close to despair many times and doubts did creep in. But you have to convince yourself you're doing the right things. And I didn't let it get to me away from the game."

Westwood held off the challenge of Ernie Els to win by a single shot at 21 under par. Raphael Jacquelin was third.

Londoner Brian Davis put himself into the record books with a round of 62.
