Westwood shoots 'best round of year'

13 April 2012

Lee Westwood described his second round 68 at the USPGA Championship as "comfortably my best round of the year".

Westwood is at one under par, eight shots off the lead held jointly by Japan's Shingo Katayama and American David Toms.

Colin Montgomerie had to play the front nine in 31 just to get to level par after an untidy inward 38.

Ian Woosnam was sweating in every sense. No fan of heat and humidity, the Welshman chipped in at the last for a 70 and at one over had to wait to see if it was good enough.

It was, but only right at the end of the day when Olin Browne, needing a birdie to knock out all those on one over, bogeyed.

Playing partner Nick Faldo, meanwhile, just made the cut after he triple-bogeyed the 18th and crashed from three under overnight to one over with a 74.

Phil Price, in the hot seat of the 10th and last automatic spot in the Ryder Cup table, had no such worries, adding a 69 to his opening 68 to stand at a useful three under.

Andrew Oldcorn battled back with a 67 and was level par, but although Andrew Coltart was alongside his brother-in-law Westwood he was disappointed. Having opened with a 67 he followed up with only a 72.

Out, however, went Sergio Garcia, Darren Clarke, Paul Lawrie, Padraig Harrington, Gary Orr and Ian Poulter.

Poulter had to wait all weekend, however, to see if he stayed in the top 12 and therefore qualified for next week's £3.5million NEC world championship in Akron.

Coltart, one place and 28,000 points behind, was the biggest danger to him.

Leading the European challenge was still Swede Niclas Fasth, runner-up in the Open last month, on five under, one behind a group that included Ernie Els and Open champion David Duval.
