Coca-Cola League One side Colchester have appointed John Ward as their new manager.

The 59-year-old former Cheltenham and Carlisle boss was Aidy Boothroyd's assistant at the Community Stadium and has now stepped into the hot seat.

He becomes the Us' third manager in little over nine months after Paul Lambert quit to join Norwich back in August and Boothroyd moved to Coventry a fortnight ago.

First-team coach Joe Dunne has been named as Ward's assistant manager.

Ward said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Aidy but he was always aware I wanted to manage again and now I've got that opportunity.

"It's a progressive football club. We are trying to build and develop and hopefully our partnership will last a bit longer than the last couple.

"It really excites me to think I've got another opportunity to further my career and see if we can get promotion."
