Vaughan: Learn from defeat

12 April 2012

Captain Michael Vaughan has warned England they must learn from the mistakes made in their warm-up defeat to Australia if they are to become genuine World Cup challengers.

Dismissed for a lowly 197 despite a 116-run stand between Vaughan and Ian Bell, England's fate was sealed when Australia reached their victory target with 9.5 overs remaining.

Vaughan said: "From 130 for two, you expect to get 250 minimum and I think that kind of score on that kind of pitch would have been a really competitive total. It's sometimes a good thing this happens early on before a tournament has started because it really gives us an indication of how we're going to play on these kind of wickets."

He added: "For the guys in the middle order, it's going to be pretty tough at times, but we've got to adapt a strategy and a technique and a method for getting better totals on these kind of pitches on a consistent basis."

Vaughan was particularly disappointed about the standard of fielding during the Australian innings, which was littered with misfields and enabled them to get off to a flying start with openers Adam Gilchrist and Shane Watson hitting 140 in 24 overs.

Vaughan believes the recent fitness work could have been a contributory factor in their sluggish display, but insists England will be sharper when they take on New Zealand on Friday.

"We didn't field well and maybe that's a little bit to do with the training we've done this week," conceded Vaughan.

"We've trained quite hard throughout the week but it has been a training week and we've tried to hit the guys with a lot of fitness and maybe that was an after-effect of all the work they've done.

"They did look a little slow in the field but we'll make sure they get enough rest over the next few days and we'll make sure we're really fresh-legged going into the New Zealand game."
