Turkish FA president in Sven slur

14 April 2012

Sven-Goran Eriksson was today the subject of an astonishing personal attack by the president of the Turkish Football Association.

In a move which is certain to intensify feelings ahead of England's showdown with Turkey next month, Haluk Ulusoy claimed the Swede will be sacked if England lose.

He also accused Eriksson of ignoring England fans' violent past by warning that they could be killed in Turkey. Haluk Ulusoy said: "I think Eriksson has forgotten the Heysel disaster. Of course he doesn't want England fans in Turkey because he doesn't want them to see a defeat. Anyway, he will be sacked after the game."

West Ham's David Connolly was on target as the Republic of Ireland drew 2-2 with Turkey in Dublin last night.
