Tour drugs test comes up negative

Accuser: Gary Player made strong claims

The European Tour have taken the first steps to prove their members do not take drugs.

At last year's Open Championship at Carnoustie Gary Player claimed he knew of players using performance-enhancing substances.

The Tour strongly denied the claims and have now introduced random testing.

Six players were picked at the European Open two weeks ago in Kent, and the European Tour's chief executive George O'Grady says all six tested negative.

He said: "We asked for fast-tracked testing procedures which normally takes some time.

"The results have come back and all six of those players were all negative, so there's no possibility of anything going wrong.

"All six had no hesitation in going through the procedures and it was conducted correctly.

"We strongly believe we are all completely clean and we now have to go about proving it."

The Tour have also added their backing to a proposal to allow golf to be included in the Olympic Games.

O'Grady added: "From a European Tour point of view, we have not had one player come to us and say anything negative about it."
