Toon crash as Spurs hold nerve

13 April 2012

Tottenham extended their unbeaten home record and ended a six-game run without a Premiership win in a bizarre match at White Hart Lane.

The six goals in north London failed to tell the whole story as three dismissals and three penalties filled an action-packed victory.

Spurs dramatic 4-2 home win over Newcastle featured red cards for two of the six goalscorers.

Peruvian Nolberto Solano was dismissed for handling the ball after opening the scoring for Newcastle and his team mate Kieron Dyer in turn was sent off after a second half penalty.

In addition Tottenham goalkeeper Neil Sullivan became the first Tottenham goalkeeper to get sent off in a league match after tripping Dyer.

After a slow start, the match exploded into action with Solano's strike in the 23rd minute.

Gary Doherty struck his first goal for Tottenham four minutes later and Darren Anderton scored from the penalty spot after Solano's error before missing another three minutes later.

Recalled Ukrainian striker Sergei Rebrov put Tottenham 3-1 ahead at the interval but their lead was reduced with Dyer's penalty before Les Ferdinand put the issue beyond doubt in the 77th minute.

Tottenham moved up two places to 12th in the league while Newcastle dropped to eighth on goal difference.

FINAL SCORE: Tottenham 4-2 Newcastle
