Tokyo Paralympics: Jonnie Peacock loses 100m title but wins bronze in dead heat

Jonnie Peacock could not make it a hat-trick of Paralympic golds but he did win bronze in an incredible dead heat in the T64 100m final in Tokyo on Monday.

Problems with injury this season meant it always looked a tall order for the British athlete to retain the title he won in London and Rio.

And despite a battling display, he finished three hundredths of a second behind his great rival, Germany’s Felix Streng, who took gold in 10.76seconds while Costa Rica’s Sherman Isidro Guity Guity won silver in 10.78sec.

Peacock and Germany’s Johannes Floors could not be separated by a photo finish as they shared the bronze.

The 28-year-old told Channel 4: “It’s tough. There are two ways to take it. I’ve got to be grateful. When I was 15 I would have loved to make the final. That race was ridiculously fast. Watching it back, I hate myself. I felt in my chest the last 30m leaning backwards I probably should have won that.

“I had a hamstring injury in May and that put me out.

“Sorry I couldn’t win it for you. I’ll win it for you next time.”
