Tiger Woods is hopeful of being able to play in the 150th Open at St Andrews as he continues his recovery from a horrific car crash.

A full-time return to the tour is not on the cards for the American, after he suffered open fractures plus foot and ankle injuries in the incident in February.

But the prospect of featuring at The Open in July is not off the table for Woods as the 45-year-old delivered an update on his comeback.

“I would love to play at St Andrews, there’s no doubt about it,” Woods told reporters in his first press conference since the crash. “It’s my favourite golf course in the world.

“Physically, hopefully I can. I’ve got to get there first. Tournament’s not going to go anywhere but I need to get there.”

Woods posted a video of himself taking shots out on the green earlier this month but has now admitted his surprise at the decline of his game since the crash.

Nevertheless, he still plans to return to the game in some form and said: "As far as playing at tour level, I don't know when that's going to happen.

"I'll play a round here and there, a little hit and giggle, I can do something like that. The USGA suggest playing forward, I really like that idea now.

"To see some of my shots fall out of the sky a lot shorter than they used to was a little eye-opening but at least I'm able to do it again. That's something. For a while there it didn't look I was going to.

"I am able to participate in the sport of golf - now to what level, I do not know. I'll keep you abreast."
