Andy Murray will now retain his No.1 ATP world ranking after Novak Djokovic's retired due to injury in his quarter-final match against Tomas Berdych.

Murray had been defeated by American Sam Querrey in five sets as he was significantly hampered by his own injury problems throughout the match.

Had Djokovic been successful in his tie he would have regained the top spot in the men's game, but an arm problem saw him concede the match early on in the second set.

The Briton became World No.1 last November, but has not been in great form since the winter. Rival Djokovic has been similarly out of sorts, and therefore unable to regain the spot that he held of many years.

Both players will ultimately be very disappointed to have fallen in the last eight but, given their recent on-court issues, it would be no surprise to see them benefit from some time time away from the tour.

After Rafael Nadal was knocked out on Monday, Roger Federer is the only member of the big four to reach the semi-finals, after defeating 2016 finalist Milos Raonic in straight sets.
