Serena Williams eased into the fifth round at Wimbledon with a comfortable straight-sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The defending champion won 7-5, 6-0 to remain on course for her 22nd Grand Slam title.

Williams will play Russian 21st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova next.

The American had to deal some tricky conditions on Centre Court but she made light work of Kuznetsova.

The match was locked at 5-5 in the first set when light drizzle started falling at SW19 and both players complained the court was too slippery.

Tournament referee Andrew Jarrett came out and, despite play continuing for a while on the outside courts, the match was suspended while roof was closed.

Williams did not lose a game once play resumed under the roof. She broke Kuznetsova to take the first set and raced away with the second set.

“It was really tricky out there,” she said. “Even though it was not raining hard, on the grass you can fall easily so it became difficult.

“It was really good to win. She has played well against me in the past so I knew I had to play well to win.”
