Roger Federer beats Rafael Nadal in epic five-set Australian Open final to win 18th career Grand Slam

Roger Federer edged a thrilling five-set final against Rafael Nadal to win the 2017 Australian Open.

Two legends of the game traded some stunning shots in the epic encounter in Melbourne as they took the contest to a decisive fifth set.

Despite Spaniard Nadal taking what looked like a crucial break early on, Federer broke back and served out the match with new balls to win an 18th Grand Slam title.

Federer's 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win came after three hours and 38 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

It means Federer has secured his fifth Melbourne crown and a first grand slam success since Wimbledon in 2012.
