Andy Murray has apologised to fans after pulling out of this month's Davis Cup tie in Glasgow - a fixture which might have been his final competitive appearance in Scotland.

Britain will face Uzbekistan without Murray, who returned to grand slam action following hip surgery at the US Open last week, but was beaten in the second round by Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, and will now take more time off to continue his rehabilitation.

In a statement on Instagram, Murray said that the Davis Cup had given him "some of the most memorable and special moments" of his career, most notably when winning the event in 2015 - Britain's first win since 1936.

The Scot led Britain to a brilliant win over Australia in Glasgow in the semi-final that year, before winning two points in a 3-2 defeat against Argentina at the same venue the following season - the last time he played in his homeland.

"With this possibly being my last chance to compete in Scotland as a professional I really wanted to be there with team and found this decision emotionally quite challenging," he wrote.

"I didn't want to just show up not ready to perform to a high enough standard and ultimately let my teammates/country down.

"If I don't get the chance to compete in Scotland again I just want to say thank you so much to all the fans who have come along to watch and support the team over the years."

Great Britain will also be without Kyle Edmund, who will take time off to work on his fitness after suffering from tonsillitis, having fallen in the first round at Flushing Meadows.

The change of format which will see the competition become an 18-team tournament at the end of the season, means the meeting with Uzbekistan is essentially a dead rubber, with relegation from the World Group no longer a threat.
