Stan Wawrinka pulled off a superb fightback to beat Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller and reach the Australian Open quarter-finals.

The 34-year-old had taken the first set in just 31 minutes but the Russian fought back to lead 2-1 and from there, it seemed to be heading only one way.

But the Swiss edged the tiebreak in the fifth set and a double break in the decider helped him to finally see off Medvedev 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 in a gruelling three-and-a-half-hour duel.

Medvedev came into the contest having won both their career meetings at Grand Slams in four sets but 2014 Australian Open champion Wawrinka took the opening set with a double break of the Russian's serve.

Medvedev, who lost to Rafael Nadal in five sets in last year's US Open final, levelled the contest by breaking Wawrinka twice in the second and nosed ahead in the match with a break in the seventh game of the third.

But Wawrinka refused to yield and took the fourth-set tiebreaker comfortably before breaking Medvedev twice in the fifth.

He will be paired up against either German seventh seed Alexander Zverev or 17th seed Andrey Rublev of Russia in the quarter-finals.
