'Heartbroken' Aryna Sabalenka releases statement after death of ex-boyfriend in 'apparent suicide'

Tennis player asks for privacy after Konstantin Kolstov found dead

Aryna Sabalenka said she is heartbroken after the death of her ex-boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov in the build-up to the Miami Open.

The world No2 is due to play in the second round against close friend Paula Badosa on Friday, just days after what Miami Police called the “apparent suicide” of former professional ice hockey player Koltsov.

Following the 42-year-old’s death, the Belarusian said on social media: “Konstantin’s death is an unthinkable tragedy and, while we were no long together, my heart is broken. Please respect my privacy and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

Sabalenka and Koltsov had first been linked together back in the summer of 2021, and he had been a regular at some of her biggest tournaments, including her second Australian Open title win back in January.

During his playing days, Koltsov had played in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins as well as the Belarusian national team before moving into coaching.

In a statement, Miami-Dade Police Department said: “According to investigators, on Monday 18 March at approximately 12.39am, Bal Harbour Police and Fire Rescue were dispatched to the St Regis Bal Harbour Resort.

“The Miami-Dade Police Department, homicide bureau, responded and has taken over the investigation of the apparent suicide of Mr Konstantin Koltsov. No foul play is suspected.”

Badosa said she had been in regular contact with Sabalenka since the incident, and described the pair as “best friends”.

Ahead of their match-up in Miami, she said: “It is a very tough situation. Yesterday, I spoke with her. This morning the same. I know the entire situation, what is happening.

“That for me is a little bit shocking also to go through because, at the end, she’s my best friend and I don’t want her to suffer. It’s a very tough situation.”
