Andy Murray is not expecting to play in any more tournaments this year but has ruled out surgery as he attempts to recover from the hip injury that has troubled him for three months.

Announcing his withdrawal from his scheduled upcoming tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai, the former world No1 said today he had decided with his team that rest and rehabilitation would give him the best chance of overcoming the injury, which first troubled him at the French Open and led to him pulling out of the US Open 11 days ago.

The Scot also expects to miss the indoor tournaments in Vienna and Paris, although he hopes to take part in his charity exhibition match against Roger Federer in Glasgow in November.

Murray would almost certainly miss the Nitto ATP Finals at the O2 Arena in London anyway because he would not have earned enough ranking points to make the eight-man field.

Murray said in a statement: “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in the upcoming events in Beijing and Shanghai and, most likely, the final two events to finish the season in Vienna and Paris due to my hip injury.

“Having consulted a number of leading specialists over the last week, along with my own team, we have decided that this is the best decision for my long-term future.

“Although this has been a frustrating year on court for many reasons, I’m confident after this extended period of rest and rehabilitation that I will be able to reach my best level again and be competing for Grand Slam titles next season.”

However, Murray said that he was looking forward to playing Federer in Glasgow later in the year and added that he would begin his 2018 season in Brisbane in preparation for the Australian Open.

“I have a fantastic team working alongside me to help me through this process,” he added.
