Sun too much for Monty

Colin Montgomerie had predicted the heat would be a telling factor at the Carlsberg Malaysian Open, and so it proved as he wilted in the closing stages finish his opening round one over par.

The Scot was challenging for the lead on four-under, until a double-bogey five on the treacherous fifth green, his 14th.

He went on to drop three more shots on his final four holes to finish with a 73.

'I finished with five fives, that is all there is to say. The heat got to me. I am going off to find some headache pills and lie down,' he said.

On the eve of the event Montgomerie warned concentration on the final holes would be one of the main challenges.

South Africa's Martin Maritz set the early clubhouse lead on six under par.
