The PGA of America has announced that Steve Stricker will captain the United States in the 2020 Ryder Cup in his home state of Wisconsin.

Stricker, who lives just over two hours away from the host venue of Whistling Straits, has made three appearances in the biennial contest as a player, most recently when losing all four of his matches in Europe's victory at Medinah in 2012.

The 51-year-old, who will celebrate his birthday on Saturday, was a vice-captain at each of the last three Ryder Cups and also led the United States to victory in the 2017 Presidents Cup in New Jersey.

Last month, it was confirmed during a press conference at European Tour headquarters at Wentworth Golf Club that Padraig Harrington would captain Europe at the 2020 Ryder Cup, succeeding Thomas Bjorn.

Europe are the current Ryder Cup holders having thrashed Jim Furyk's US team - who have not won in Europe since 1993 - 17½-10½ on the Albatros course of Le Golf National in Guyancourt, France in September 2018.

The US claimed victory on home soil at Minnesota's Hazeltine National Golf Club in 2016.
