Sprinter James Dasaolu secures final spot in British team for the European Athletics Championship

The race for the final 100 metres spot in the British team for the European Athletics Championships has been won by James Dasaolu.

Dwain Chambers and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey had already cemented their places by finishing first and second at the trials in Birmingham last month.

It left the selectors with a headache over whether to take Dasaolu, who has run just twice outdoors this season after suffering a hamstring tear during the indoor season, or Chijindu Ujah, who has clocked 9.96secs this season.

But Dasaolu’s identical runs of 10.03secs in Lausanne and then Glasgow were enough to warrant selection in the 74-strong team.

Dai Greene had been expected to miss out on European selection having missed Glasgow and not achieved the qualifying time but the selectors have used their discretion to give him a spot.

Mo Farah, who has been struggling with illness recently, is set to go for the European double in the 5000m and 10,000m while fellow world champion Christine Ohuruogu, who had hinted she would not focus on the individual event at either the Europeans or the Commonwealth Games, is a surprise pick as the sole representative in the 400m.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson, fresh from her personal best 6.92m leap in Glasgow, is selected for the long jump and fellow decathlete Morgan Lake will compete in the high jump.

Meanwhile, Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson will return to action tonight in Lucerne having had their 18-month doping bans cut to six months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Both tested positive for the banned stimulant oxilofrine but the two Jamaicans argued it had come as a result of contamination from the supplement Epiphany.
