Spurs try judo in fight for 2012 stadium

New pitch: Tottenham plans to rebuild the Stratford stadium
5 April 2012

Street dance and judo are Tottenham Hotspur's secret weapons in securing rights to the Olympic stadium, it emerged today.

Tottenham plan to remove the existing structure, discard the athletics track and rebuild a 60,000 capacity football stadium to ensure the venue is commercially viable.

But the move has been labelled "corporate crime" by West Ham vicechairman Karren Brady, and has also been criticised by an influential lobby including the London 2012 organising committee chairman, Lord Coe, and the IAAF president, Lamine Diack.

To mitigate the backlash, Tottenham plan to rebuild and maintain Crystal Palace as a 25,000 capacity athletics stadium for the duration of the lease at the Stratford venue, and spend "tens of millions" on an athletics legacy fund and other community projects.

Their official images released to support their bid, in partnership with AEG, show "a typical Tottenham Hotspur Foundation day encompassing volleyball, boxing, judo, boccia and street dancing".

Mr Levy has accused West Ham of "scaremongering", and pleaded for the bid to be decided on "economic" rather than "political" grounds.

In an interview with the Standard today, Mr Levy reiterates his view that "athletics and football cannot successfully co-exist".
