Schumacher heading for Senna record

13 April 2012

Michael Schumacher, whose six-race winning streak was ended in Sao Paulo, bounced back in practice in the San Marino Grand Prix.

He spearheaded a dream one-two for Ferrari in front of the tifosi, the team's fanatical fans.

Schumacher finished just over 0.2secs ahead of Rubens Barrichello and will be favourite to make it eight poles in succession.

That would equal the record set by Ayrton Senna in 1988/1989.

It will be a poignant moment if he can match Senna's mark on the Italian track where Brazil's three-time world champion suffered his fatal crash almost seven years ago.

"I am not bothered about getting another pole - winning the race is the only thing that counts," said Schumacher, who will also be bidding for a hat-trick of wins and his fourth overall in Imola.

"I think what happened in Brazil was just an exception - at least that's what I hope. If we have similar conditions over this weekend then we will confirm that."
