School Profile - St Paul's, Barnes

Jim Hooley|Daily Mail13 April 2012

St Paul's School was founded in 1509 by John Colet, Dean of St Paul's Cathedral and almost five centuries on is still one of our leading schools.

There are 815 boys accommodated on a 45-acre site in Barnes and the school has a well-earned reputation for academic excellence. Old Paulines include John Milton, Edmund Halley, GK Chesterton, Field Marshal Lord Montgomery, Jonathan Miller and Peter Schaffer.

It provides excellent sporting facilities and being on the Thames has always boasted a strong rowing tradition. Their latest Olympian is Simon Dennis, a member of Britain's winning eight at Sydney. St Paul's was a founder member of the Rugby Union, has always had a strong fixture list and they still put out 16 teams every Saturday up to Christmas.

This Under 15 team are an exceptional strong, skilful, organised and focused team. They sat down before the season and decided on two aims: to remain unbeaten and reach Twickenham in the Daily Mail Cup. The first is still intact after 23 games and the second hinges on how they cope with theconsiderable challenge of giantkillers Outwood Grange.

This tie sums up what the cup is all about and watch for the battle in midfield where the game could easily be won or lost.Four of the team have been chosen to play for Middlesex - Tommy Stadlen, Harry Dannenbaum, James Fowler and Hugo Walford while another five players are in the B squad.

Glen Harrison, a Cambridge Blue who played for England at U18 and U19 level and Wharfedale, West Hartlepool, Sale and Harlequins is master in charge of rugby but South African Eugene du Toit coaches the U15s. He is a product ofKing Edward VII School, Johannesburg, played for Transvaal Schools and Witwatersrand University.

Last but not least, Les Barlow, in charge of U16rugby, was an England and Lions reserve while playing for Rosslyn Park. He started coaching at St Paul's in 1963 and is a senior RFU coach. He has coached Rosslyn Park and at all levels in the England set-up. He is currently guiding Hammersmith and Fulham RFC.
