Ruud is star of show

Manchester United are good enough to become European champions this season according to Stuttgart coach Felix Magath.

The German club were beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford. Both sides qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League but, as group winners, United will avoid being drawn against Real Madrid or AC Milan.

Ruud van Nistelrooy equalled Denis Law's 28-goal European club record with United's opener before setting up Ryan Giggs for the second.

Magath said: "Van Nistelrooy is a complete player. He can do absolutely everything - head, score, control the ball under pressure, create chances for others. He is fantastic.

"If you look at people like him and Giggs, they really make a big difference to United. That is why I think it is possible they could go right to the end of the competition."

Scottish champions Rangers crashed 3-1 at home to Greek side Panathinaikos to finish bottom of United's group and miss out on a place in the UEFA Cup. Goalkeeper Stefan Klos described the defeat as "agony" after Rangers had crumbled despite going ahead through Michael Mols after 28 minutes.

Real Madrid and Porto qualified from Group F after a 1-1 draw, Celta Vigo won 2-1 at AC Milan to go through with the Italians and Sparta Prague finished second behind Chelsea after beating Lazio 1-0.
