Rob Andrew's bid for new role at RFU

In the running: Rob Andrew has applied for job
10 April 2012

Rob Andrew today applied for the new job of operations director at the Rugby Football Union after his current position was scrapped as part of a managerial overhaul.

Andrew has been director of elite rugby since 2006 but his department is being merged with the community arm, forming a new division with three key areas - high performance, development and operations.

There had been speculation that Andrew, like the finance director Nick Eastwood, could leave the organisation in the wake of the restructuring by chief executive John Steele.

But Andrew's decision to seek the wide-ranging operations role indicates his desire to play a key role at the RFU in the build-up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.

Andrew, who negotiated the governing body's eight-year deal with the Premiership clubs, was invited to apply for the job by Steele.

The operations director will manage the RFU's relationship with Premiership Rugby and the Rugby Players' Association while overseeing all the support networks for the game at all levels in England.

If appointed, Andrew, 47, would have to work closely with the new performance director, a position with which Sir Clive Woodward has been heavily linked, and the development director.
