England flop Lesley Vainikolo today ended speculation of a return to rugby league when he signed a new two-year deal with Premiership club Gloucester.

The winger, who made only five appearances for England before being cast aside, made his name with Bradford Bulls before switching codes.

Vainikolo, 30, had been linked with a return to the 13-a-side code when his contract runs out in May but Gloucester coach Bryan Redpath said today: "I am really pleased that we've agreed terms with Les. He's worked so hard to get back to fitness after his Achilles injury and I think we are just seeing him get back to the form that we know he is capable of."

Meanwhile, Saracens today signed prop Petrus du Plessis, 27, from Nottingham ahead of schedule. The South African was due to join next season but the deal has been moved forward after injuries to Carlos Nieto and Tom Mercey.
