Harlequins have handed a debut to Italy fly-half Tommy Allan for the first game of their title defence, at Newcastle Falcons on Sunday.

British and Irish Lion Marcus Smith is absent until early October, making Allan a key player for Quins this season.

He slots straight into the backline that won June’s Premiership final.

Jack Walker, signed from Bath, starts at hooker.

Another new signing, Scotland centre Huw Jones, is named on the bench, which is where Joe Marler starts the season.

Alex Dombrandt captains the side from No8 in the absence of injured Stephan Lewies.

Newcastle signed Mike Brown and Nathan Earle from Quins this summer.
