England have won their 14th consecutive rugby union international by beating Australia 37-21 at Twickenham, tying the record set by the World Cup-winning side of 2002-03, and ensured they would finish 2016 unbeaten.

Victory over the Wallabies extended a winning run dating back to October 10 2015, when an already eliminated England ran in 10 tries against Uruguay to end a disastrous home World Cup.

Under new head coach Eddie Jones England have won all their matches, including a first Grand Slam since 2003, and proved too good for an Australia side they had already swept in a three match tour during the summer.

Jones’ side are now just four matches short on New Zealand’s record for a Tier One Test playing nation, achieved between August 2015 and October 2016, and another Grand Slam in the Six Nations would assure them of that crown.

However they would still be some way short of international rugby’s longest winning streak. Cyprus won 24 successive matches between 2008 and 2014, when their run was ended by Andorra in Paphos.
