London Welsh head coach Lyn Jones admits he has no idea how good his squad can become after securing their first ever Aviva Premiership victory.

Having been soundly beaten by Leicester and Harlequins, the newly promoted side fought back from 14-0 down to beat Exeter 25‑24 at Oxford yesterday.

No8 Ed Jackson rounded off a last desperate surge to force his way over from close range and Seb Jewell converted to win the match.

The spirit showed by Welsh was summed up by captain Jonathan Mills, who lost two teeth following an accidental first-half clash of heads with team-mate Alfie To’oala but returned to lead the side to victory.

Coach Jones said: “We didn’t fold. We kept in there and took our opportunities. We showed a lot of character to come back.

“We don’t really know where we are yet. We have some players who haven’t been in England for four weeks yet. We’re a feisty bunch but it does take time.

“It was important we grew as a team and the win over a very strong well-drilled side, should improve our confidence.”

Champions Harlequins remain top after a 37-14 victory over Sale while London Wasps consigned London Irish to bottom place with a Stephen Jones-inspired 43-14 victory.

Meanwhile, Chris Ashton trained with Saracens today despite being hit in the face with a glass which left him with two cuts.

The incident happened on Saturday night after Ashton had helped Sarries secure a 9-9 draw with Leicester at Wembley.

Ashton was with fellow Saracens players, their wives and girlfriends, before someone unknown to them approached the group and started arguing with the England international.

A club statement read: “A brief altercation occurred, which resulted in a friend of this stranger attacking Chris with a glass. He suffered two minor cuts but neither required stitches.”

Sarries chief executive Edward Griffiths added: “It is a reality that well known sports people are provoked by strangers and subsequent events are instantly tweeted.

“For clarity, Chris is not in trouble at all. On the contrary, he was celebrating an anniversary with his girlfriend and showed admirable restraint.”
