Rixon on Surrey list as Kumble joins Middlesex

Australian Steve Rixon is one of the candidates on the short list to succeed Keith Medlycott as Surrey head coach.

Rixon, 50 next month, transformed the New Zealand side with his controversial methods last year and now coaches New South Wales. Richard Thompson, the chairman of Surrey's cricket committee, said: "We have spoken to him. He is one of three or four in the same position.

"We are looking for one of the best coaches and I am surprised with the class of applicants. It is very encouraging."

Assistant coach Alan Butcher is also on Surrey's list.

Meanwhile, Indian spin bowler Anil Kumble, who took 12 wickets in the final Test against Australia at Sydney, has signed his contract with Middlesex but coach John Emburey said: "It has still to be ratified by the Indian Board. He will miss the start of the season and maybe a game or two at the end."
