Refs baulk at full-time pay

13 April 2012

A number of top referees are in turmoil over whether to give up their day jobs to go full time next season.

The nominated 24 attended a briefing on Monday featuring officials including the chief executives of the FA and the Premier League, Adam Crozier and Richard Scudamore.

Several referees are agonising over whether the pay on offer, up to a maximum of around £60,000 a season, is sufficient.

While some whistlers, like freelance sales consultant, Graham Poll, have flexibility in their 'day jobs', and others can negotiate part-time terms with their bosses, those in traditional 9-5 employment are having problems.

Contracts, offering £33,000 retainers, will be sent out this week.

These will be topped up by 900 Premiership match fees and, as before, referees will also handle some Football League games.

But the fact that match appointments will be dealt with on a performance basis means that some referees could earn as little as £40,000.
