Premier League games forced off

The Barclays Premier League matches at Blackpool and Everton have fallen victim to the cold weather.

Blackpool's match against Liverpool, scheduled for a 3pm kick-off, has been postponed due to the cold weather after officials were forced to postpone the game.

Everton's game against Birmingham at Goodison Park has also been postponed because the freezing temperatures have left the stadium in an unfit condition for the match.

Overnight temperatures of minus nine degrees meant a scheduled midday inspection at Bloomfield Road was brought forward to 10am because of concerns about the pitch, which does not have undersoil heating. And despite covers and hot-air blowers being employed an assessment of the playing surface showed there was no possibility of play.

At Goodison the club reported there were "several miles of frozen pipes, many of which burst during the course of Christmas Day night".

The Clydesdale Bank Premier League programme was missing two games, with Kilmarnock's home game against Hearts postponed earlier this week and Dundee United's clash with Hamilton falling on Sunday morning because of a frozen pitch after a second inspection.

npower Championship strugglers Crystal Palace will also have to sit out on Boxing day after their clash with Norwich at Selhurst Park was postponed due to a frozen pitch. Details of when the match will be rescheduled will be announced next week, with games due to take place at Middlesbrough and Scunthorpe having been called off earlier in the week.

Exeter's League One match with Swindon has also become a victim of the weather while the game at Brisbane Road between Leyton Orient and MK Dons was also called off. Given previous postponements it means there are only four games in League One, with those between Charlton and Southampton, Dagenham & Redbridge and Brighton, Bournemouth and Plymouth and Huddersfield and Hartlepool surviving so far.

In League Two, the games between Shrewsbury and Bury, Torquay and Cheltenham, Southend and Barnet and Northampton and Burton were also called off on Boxing Day morning. Due to earlier postponements, it means the only games still on in League Two as it stands are Aldershot v Gillingham, Stevenage v Oxford and Wycombe v Hereford.

All Sunday's race meetings have been called off while in rugby union, the Aviva Premiership match between Saracens and Wasps at Wembley - where Gavin Henson is set to make his debut for the hosts - is still on after three other matches were postponed, while the Magners League clash between Henson's old club the Ospreys and Scarlets remains on.
