Powell wants to be TV's star turn

13 April 2012

Charlton defender Chris Powell is hoping to be a television star this weekend to help his chances of going to the World Cup.

The Addicks take on Middlesbrough in the live Sky match on Sunday at the Riverside Stadium with Powell keen to impress England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Eriksson surprised many by handing the 32-year-old his first cap last February for the friendly against Spain.

Powell has made three more international appearances since, but has been overshadowed by the emergence of young Arsenal star Ashley Cole in the battle for a place at left-back.

However, Powell is keen to prove just what he can do in front of the cameras and is confident of making the squad for Japan and South Korea in the summer.

"It's a big few months," he admitted. I'm sure Sven has the nucleus of his squad in his mind, barring injuries, and there are probably only seven or eight places up for grabs.

"You just have to hope that he feels there's a position and a role for you. Every other player will be thinking the same thing, though."

Central defender Mark Fish should return on Sunday having missed the midweek win over Derby because of illness.

Right back Luke Young could also feature, although he has only just returned to training after 10 days out with an ankle injury.

Mark Kinsella and Claus Jensen will definitely miss the game as they continue to recover from knee injuries.
