Petit hopes for London move after Chelsea exit

Emmanuel Petit today revealed that he expects to leave Chelsea in the summer. The midfielder's contract expires at the end of the season and he has had no discussions with the club about a new deal.

The French star has played just seven games this season because of a persistent knee injury and is convinced his future lies elsewhere.

He said: "There have been no talks between me and the club and I don't believe they want me to stay. It's not a shame, it's a business these days.

"I hope to come back by the end of the season but I don't think my future will be at Chelsea."

Petit has been blighted by injury and indifferent form since leaving Barcelona for £7.5million in 2001.

Despite such problems, the former Arsenal player believes he can play on for another two or three years.

The 33-year-old attracted interest from Tottenham last summer and would welcome a move to another London club. He added: "I love London and there is life in me yet."

Although Petit is preparing to leave Chelsea he believes manager Claudio Ranieri should stay at the club. The Italian's future is in doubt unless he wins the Champions League this season but Petit feels he should be given more time to land trophies.

Meanwhile Stuttgart, Chelsea's opponents in the last 16 of the Champions League, held a three-hour crisis meeting this week in a bid to restore their season in time for next Tuesday's clash at Stamford Bridge.

Players and staff met for a clear-theair dinner after achieving only one victory in 12 matches. The German side will have to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Chelsea in the second leg.

Manager Felix Magath urged fans to be patient. He said: "We want to give our young players time to develop."
